Maundy Thursday  April 1, 2021- 7PM  Guide for Online Worship
Our Desire for God’s Grace O God, we know our transgressions are ever before us – all of the ways we have ignored your word, rejected your love, Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love hurt our neighbor, neglected to speak for the least and the lost Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love fallen far short of your expectations. Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love Gracious Savior – we need your mercy, we desire your forgiveness, Create in me a clean heart, O God. We pray for renewal in our spirit, in our relationship with you, in our relationship with the world. Create in me a clean heart, O God. We accept the renewal of our hearts through God’s grace, we delight once again in the joy of our salvation through Christ, we look forward in hope to the places the Holy Spirit will take us. The Means of God’s Grace Gospel Reading – John 13:1 –17, 31b –35 Hymn – Jesu, Jesu (verses 1 & 5) ♪ Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love, ♪ show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you. ♪ Kneels at the feet of his friends, silently washes their feet, ♪ Master who acts as a slave to them. [Refrain] Reflection Footwashing You’re invited to bring a damp washcloth or hand sanitizer to the service. You may also bring your ash cross-on-a-cloth. Time will be given for you to wash your hands, as you have so often done in this last year, as an act of love and service to your neighbor. Lord’s Supper Since we cannot share together in the Lord’s Supper on this night, we will be meditating on the event by reflecting on Leonardo DaVinci’s great painting “The Last Supper,” accompanied by the hymn “What Wondrous Love Is This.” Where do you see yourself in this painting? Tenebrae We will move into the Tenebrae (Latin for “darkness”) section of the service. It is a solemn reading of the last hours, death, and crucifixion of Jesus from the Gospel of John. If you would like to follow along in your Bible, the readings are from John 18:1-19:42. You are encouraged, though, to rest and listen. After Jesus’s body is entombed, we then wait, in tension and hope, for the news of the Resurrection on Easter Sunday. Dismissal Go in peace. May Jesus Christ, who for our sake became obedient unto death, even death on a cross, keep you and strengthen you this night and forever. Amen. Silently exit the service.
